Craig Croft RIG

(15th June 2010)

The Craig Croft Resident Implementation Group (RIG) was set up by North Solihull Partnership (NSP) following the completion of the neighbourhood plan for the area. The meetings are held once a month for local residents within the Craig Croft Neighbourhood Plan area at the Chelmsley Wood Baptist Centre. The residents who form the RIG are encouraged to actively engage with the regeneration process by feeding in ideas, suggestions and proposals.

The RIG assists the regeneration project by giving advice on the real and perceived impact that the Neighbourhood Plan proposals will have on local residents.  The residents also act as a sounding board for any proposals the partnership may put forward.  They are also encouraged to provide ideas for local projects and initiatives.

The aim of the group was to involve local residents in the regeneration of their area, so that the regeneration was being done in partnership with the community and not just done to them without any consultation on their thoughts and aspirations. It is hoped that such methods will help foster feelings of pride and ownership of a neighborhood and tackle other social issues of regeneration, not just the physical structure of the building (homes, shops and schools).

Craig Croft RIG have been a fully constituted group since 2006 with Christine Christine Hopkins & Ronnie Cashmore as joint Chairs and Gordon Lewis as Vice Chair. Rrepresentatives from the NSP attend to help facilitate and answer questions on the progress of the regeneration and the group also discusses and addresses other social and community issues within the area in addition to this.

Key priorities for the group are community facilities, improved greenspace, the new Village Centre and making sure that the new housing that is built is built to a high standard that reflects the needs of local residents.

"The RIG talks through aspects of the regeneration project and gives residents the chance to voice their views, both positive and negative. These views are then taken back to the regeneration team and put into action. It's a great way to get our voices heard", Christine Hopkins Joint Chair of the Craig Croft RIG

of North Solihull.

Representives from the RIG attended and contributed to the NSP Community Workshop to look at the performance to date of NSP and ways the NSP can improve its performance in the future.
